Salt Lake City, UT– In celebration of their 19th Birthday, Uinta Brewing Company introduces the newest addition to their Crooked Line of beers, Birthday Suit, a Sour Cherry Ale.

Uinta began research and development on this year’s Sour Cherry Ale in September of 2009, 18 months later, the first release is scheduled to hit shelves in March, 2012. This bottled conditioned Sour Cherry Ale pours a deep pink hue with a delicate lavender tinted head. Birthday Suit has a moderate body with a sparkling mouth feel and finishes clean. This soured golden ale, which was matured on cherries, delivers distinct tartness balanced by subtle sweetness. Birthday Suit Sour Cherry Ale has an ABV of 5.7%.

But don’t get too hooked on this particular style of beer. Not only does Birthday Suit have a limited annual release, but the name does not signify a particular style of beer. With each new year, sometime in February or early March, Birthday Suit will bring a new variety to the Crooked Line, capturing the essence of why Uinta began the ‘Crooked Line’, a line of ‘crooked’, exciting beers which stray from traditional processes.

Keeping with Crooked Line’s tradition of supporting local art talent, Birthday Suit’s label art, complete with two characters in their “birthday suits”, was produced by Travis Bone, a local show print artist (Furturtle Show Prints). Travis is also the creative force behind the art adorning Uinta’s Cockeyed Cooper bottle.

Inspired by an upcoming 20th anniversary, Uinta Brewery sought a fresh approach in showcasing its products while maintaining the classic Uinta feel which reflects an appreciation for the outdoors and the timeless beauty of the mountain west. The process enabled Uinta to clearly define three lines of beers under the Uinta Family: the Classic Line, Organic Line and Crooked Line.

Uinta designed a custom, proprietary 12 ounce bottle as part of the redesign project. Referred to as the “compass bottle,” the new bottle shape is branded by a 360-degree compass embossed into the bottle’s shoulder. The upshot? You’ll never get lost with a Uinta bottle in hand! Naturally, adopting the proprietary bottle gave rise to the need for a substantial investment in new bottling line equipment.

The new logo embodies the uniqueness of the company’s namesake, the Uinta Mountains. A compass is integrated into the logo with the needle pointing East-West, referencing the only major range facing East-West in the continental U.S.. The compass also speaks to Uinta’s sense of exploration and direction as Uinta consistently strives to brew the best beer possible. “Earth, Wind and Beer” remains part of the logo referring to Uinta’s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship. A separate renewable energy logo has been added to packaging as Uinta Brewing has become both wind and solar powered!

Uinta’s “Organic Line” replaces the Four+ Series. The Organic Line includes three full-time brands: ‘Baba’ Black Lager (New!), ‘Wyld’ Extra Pale Ale; and ‘Monkshine’ Belgian Blonde Ale. The line features four seasonal brands: ‘Hazel’ Amber Wheat (new!); ‘Punk’n’ Harvest Pumpkin Ale; ‘Sum’r’ Summer Ale; and ‘Hyve’ Honey Ale. The ‘Organic Mix’r’ is the new organic sampler pack and features Wyld and Baba with a rotating Organic Seasonal. Organic Line beers range from 4.0 to 6.8% alcohol by volume (abv).

Uinta’s “Classic Line” will consist of eight full-time brews varying from 4.0 to 10.4% abv: ‘Hop Notch’ IPA (New!); ‘Cutthroat’ Pale Ale; ‘Dubhe’ Imperial Black IPA; Anniversary Barley Wine’; ‘Golden Spike’ Hefeweizen; ‘Hoodoo’ Kolsch; ‘King’s Peak’ Porter; and ‘Trader’ Session IPA. The seasonal brands include ‘Bristlecone’ Brown Ale; ‘Yard Sale’ Winter Lager; and ‘Skipping Stone’ Summer Lager.

Uinta’s ‘Crooked Line’ preserves its tradition of engaging local artists to design the labels for untraditional beers packaged in 750ml cork finished bottles. However, both the wirehood and the cork were updated through the redesign. The Crooked Line currently consists of four full time brands: ‘Cockeyed Cooper’ Bourbon Barrel Barley Wine, ‘Detour’ Double IPA, ‘Labyrinth’ Black Ale, and ‘Tilted Smile’ Imperial Pilsner. Alcohol content ranges from 9% to 13.2% abv. Seasonal and limited brews will be released in the future under the Crooked Line. Look for Jacked Imperial Pumpkin at 10.31% abv this September.

Fulfilling consumer demand, no beer recipes were altered during the redesign. Uinta beer drinkers may depend upon the same high quality beer they have come to expect, and will hopefully be pleased with some new additions to the family.

In an effort to continue their commitment to using renewable resources, Uinta Brewing Company has recently installed solar-electric paneling on the brewery’s roof.

In an effort to continue their commitment to using renewable resources, Uinta Brewing Company has recently installed solar-electric paneling on the brewery’s roof. At this time 126 Schott 235 watt modules panels have been installed, allowing up to 30KW of electrical power to be generated for Uinta’s beer production—roughly 15% of the brewery’s power usage.

In 2001, Uinta became the first Utah business to become 100% Wind Powered; investment in solar energy is an extension of Uinta’s commitment to the environment and the Salt Lake community. Uinta’s power will now be 85% Wind and 15% Solar.

Also, in hopes of bringing due awareness to the importance of using renewable energy and the conservation of all forms of energy, Uinta has installed a digital monitor in the brewery’s foyer, which will display both the amount of energy Uinta is currently using, as well as how much power the solar panels are generating for the brewery.

Uinta hopes to continually find new ways of taking steps within the brewery to conserve energy, thereby setting an example in the Salt Lake business community. In addition to the solar panels, Uinta installed “t8” lighting throughout the brewery. This form of lighting emits the same amount of light, while using only half the power required to illuminate the space.

Dubhe was named after Utah’s Centennial Star, a star classified as a Red Giant. Dubhe, the star, appears orange in color, and is found at the top end of the big dipper’s spoon. The name “Dubhe” continues Uinta’s tradition of celebrating the great state of Utah, however, “Dubhe” is a fitting name for more than that reason: this beer is as black as the night sky and is brewed with an astronomical amount of hops.

Dubhe is comprised of five hop varieties, a hop profile bold enough to shine through the roasted, dark malt character of this beer. A citrusy hop aroma, achieved by dry hopping with a proprietary blend of extreme Northwest hops, balanced with notes of mild dark chocolate and a hint of sweet licorice. Smooth from start to finish, Dubhe’s layered flavor profile emerges with rich and rounded toasted malt flavors, and is followed by a lively hop bitterness. At over 5 pounds of hops per barrel, Dubhe is the most hop-laden beer Uinta has ever produced.

This shinning new addition is brewed with hemp seed (A play on the name, perhaps?), and has a far-out ABV of 9.2%.

Last night was the Zucca beer dinner in Ogden Utah. It was a great turn out, and a great night. Chef Elio Scanu of Zucca did another amazing job with the meal allowing both complimentary and contrasting pairings with the beer. The night started out with Seadas- Sardinian turnovers filled with Fiori Sardo cheese and finished with Tuscan Chestnut Honey. This was paired with Hive Uinta’s Honey Ale. Hive’s honey nose and dry finish was great with the Fiori Sardo and the Tuscan Honey. Other pairings included a small wood fired pizza paired with Gelande Amber Lager, Grilled Pork Tenderloin paired with King’s Peak Porter, and Roasted Duck paired with Uinta Anniversary Barley Wine.

One Uinta Crooked Line beer made the menu– A scallop and grilled prawn with Tomato & Sweet Garlic BBQ sauce, and Anson Mills Polenta was paired with the Tilted Smile Imperial Pilsner. The Sweetness of the BBQ was cut with the crisp character of the Pilsner.

Uinta really thanks Zucca and Chef Scanu for making it a fun and casual night for us and all of the guests.
